Sixties Survivors #9: Grace Slick

Happy Birthday, Grace.  69 today.

Actually, I never could warm up to Grace’s singing that much.  Just personal taste, I guess.  She always sounded scary to me. Like a demon was showing her how to spit ice.

A lot of people liked that.  But me, I like a voice where the singer sounds like he or she laughs from time to time.  Not a cynical laugh –  a big ha ha ha kind of laugh.  Like Janis, if I might make an invidious comparison.  Grace was like, run,  here comes the ice storm!

I like this picture of her though.  Makes me wonder if I had her all wrong?

Anyway, hope your painting is coming along well, that your studio gets plenty of light,  and that you’ve found some peace in this world.

  1. Ha. Grace was gonna dose Nixon’s tea, back in ’71 when she was invited by Tricia for a Finch College soiree. Grace’s date? Abbie Hoffman. I don’t think they got past the front gate. Here comes the ice storm!

  4. Loved her then. Love her now. I’d see her everyday if I could and tell her so. I would go see her every chance I could back then. The last time was San Diego Sports Arena 1974. I miss that chick.

  5. We all have our personal tastes, but Grace is high on my taste list. I thought JA and JS lacked a certain magic without her. I hope she’s well and happy – and this photo is beautiful! Grace, your politics may have been a bunch farther left than mine (and mine were out there), but your music was right on; thanks!

    • I have the “Great Society 2 album LP”. I always thought it was early Jefferson Airplane and they just changed their name. But they were 2 different bands and the Airplane bought Gracie’s Great Society contract for something like $150.

  6. Funny – this little piece – which I spent all of 15 minutes on – is the Pig’s alltime most popular post. It gets hundred of hits every day and has since I posted it. You Grace fans are awesome, you deserve more. I never knew Grace but knew lots of people who did know her in her early days. Maybe I should do a real profile of her time with, say, The Great Society.

  7. She was one the the core voices of the Hippie culture. She and the airplane could tweak that feeling we all shared as if they owned it. Thank you for Woodenships, Uncle Sam’s Blues, White Rabbit and all the rest.

  8. Actually, I am tempted to agree with the p-pig here. Miss Slick’s voice (and the airplane’s musick) does not seem so groovy, hippie-dippie like, but icy, odd, distant, metallic. She’s sort of entertaining speaker, however (see the recent interview in Counterpunch…and sexxay).

Much 60s music, like Hendrix has that sound as well (tho’ Jimi perhaps a bit tighter than JA). Like a Bosch-painting come to life–or the Lewis Carroll world hinted at in White Rabbit. Let’s not forget ‘Nam’s going down, protests, and it’s only about 20 years after Hiroshima (and Hitler and Stalin for that matter). Rock–the musick of technological dystopia.

  9. Grace had the piercing voice that screamed for the necessary reforms of the era. She stuck to her guns, unlike the Dixie Chicks. She was one Rocks’ original hot chicks, and one of the few that thrived on vocal talent alone. That’s her best photo.

  11. With all due respect, while you may not like her voice, Grace Slick has a great sense of humor, and to this day is still vital. She sent a vial of her urine to protest abuse of horses in making Premarin to the Rx company. She enclosed a note that the company really pissed her off. At 69 years of age, you got to love that! Anyway, I love her voice, her mind, and her attitude. Great photo. Listen to her music again – try some of the latter stuff from “Dreams” or the JA reunion album if you like mellow.

    • Thanks for the respect! I do appreciate all you Gracie fans writing in. Never ceases to amaze me. I actually met Grace a number of times when we were kids together in the early Haight-Ashbury era. Never dreamed she would inspire people like she has.

    • Gracie got a lot of mileage out of that bunny. I’m still not sure – should I take the one to get tall or the one to get small?

  13. Wow – sounds like fightin’ words. But I kind of like the idea of a battle between the forces of Grace Slick and the forces of Walker Percy. Like ‘Which side are you on, boys?, which side are you on? I am definitely not one of Grace’s lieutenants. Never cared that much about her, one way or the other.

  14. Sry. Your blog was set for moderation for a bit (?), P. Then it disappeared. So I have decided (temporarily, at least) to retract the excommunication. I sort of enjoyed Miss Slick’s antics when she…was uh nice to look at, as with the nipplicious pic above. Now, she’s not so nice to look at (well, at least not the babe she was).

But…as I said in the missing post, Gracie does understand one key point from the 60s–the right of Dissent, however basic that sounds. Some so-called radicals, hippies, yippies, whatever never learned it (or forgot it, maybe when they moved into the ‘burbs, and joined the GOP).

  16. Long live the original Queen of ROCK….. Grace was and still is an amazing gal’…..She had a vocal style and delivery that was powerful and innovative, be she singing lead, or her soaring harmonies. She is still vibrant and captivating in her own unique way. Unfortunately, she is very underrated in the annals of rock… she committed the ultimate sin…SHE SURVIVED. Her cross-town contemporary, Janis Joplin, is usually given the title of Queen of Rock, or the first woman superstar of rock.. Not true, during her lifetime, Grace was the reigning Queen, so to speak.Janis died young and hence, the iconic status. Keep on going Gracie’…….

    • There yuh go, pal. Thanks for dropping by. One of these days when I get back to writing this blog, I will write down my own early memories of Grace — when she was still with the Great Society. I’m glad so many people care about her – you Grace fans are amazing to me.

      • Great! Myself and others will certainly look forward to that. Too bad Grace is not aware of the continued interest/respect that she still garners…She is so self efacing and blase’ about her voice and talent as a singer.
